My Academic Background

I am a postgraduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in International Security, following my undergraduate studies in History. My academic journey has been shaped by a strong interest in global politics and historical contexts that influence international relations.

Studying history at an undergraduate level allowed me to develop critical analytical skills, particularly in understanding long-term political, social, and economic trends. My undergraduate dissertation involved extensive research using both primary and secondary sources, which strengthened my ability to engage with complex historical narratives and evaluate evidence-based arguments. I found this particularly engaging and fulfilling to complete, and it has certainly shaped the way in which I write and how I view the world around me.

Transitioning into International Security for my Master’s was a natural step, as I wanted to explore contemporary security issues through both theoretical and practical lenses. My coursework has covered key areas such as terrorism, intelligence, urban warfare, and the ethics of warfare itself. I am particularly interested in this ethical dimension of war, the security of civilians in conflict zones, and the evolving nature of modern warfare, especially in urban environments.

My Master’s thesis, titled "The Strategic Challenges of Protecting Civilians in Urban Warfare," focuses on how security strategies in urban conflicts impact civilians, and I am conducting a comparative study of Gaza, Kyiv, and Fallujah, analysing different security approaches and their implications for civilian protection.

Beyond my academic studies though, I have been actively involved in university life. I would always recommend keeping a work-life balance healthy when studying long-term, as burn-out is common in postgraduate students and it's necessary to have a break!

I am a course representative, which has given me the opportunity to engage with faculty and fellow students to discuss academic improvements and represent my peers’ interests. This role has strengthened my ability to communicate, advocate for others, and understand the inner workings of academic institutions. I also find this useful towards any career opportunities I may have, as it has pushed me to be more confident in my own thoughts and abilities and not just second-guessing myself consistently.

During my final year of undergraduate study, I joined the lacrosse society, which provided a great balance to my academic commitments. Being part of a sports society allowed me to develop teamwork skills and experience a new challenge outside of my academic focus. It was a refreshing way to push myself physically while balancing my studies.

Now, however, I simply go to the gym in the week, where and when I can. I find it a struggle to motivate myself sometimes due to exhaustion from the course, something that I am trying to combat.

Looking ahead, I am interested in a career that intersects security, diplomacy, and publishing. My passion for security studies aligns with roles in research institutions, think tanks, international organizations, and government agencies. All of these interest me, and I'm keen to (at some point) find work in one of these.

At the same time, I have a good interest in journalism and publishing, particularly in areas related to international affairs. I enjoy writing and analysing security issues from a critical perspective, which is why I started this blog—to share my insights on global security while documenting my travels and everyday life as a student.

Through my academic and travel experiences, I have developed a strong foundation in research, analysis, and communication.

Whether I pursue a career in policy, international research, or journalism, I aim to contribute meaningful discussions to the field of international affairs while also continuing to explore and write about my experiences abroad.

Work Experience

Volunteer
November 2023

As a bartender/waitress at a local pub in Oxford, I play a vital role in creating a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for our customers. My responsibilities usually include serving drinks and food, managing orders, and ensuring customers have a memorable experience. I've learned to develop essential skills such as excellent communication, multitasking, and customer service along with a broad knowledge of beverages.

As a volunteer for Charnwood Alpaca Rescue, I had the rewarding opportunity to contribute to the care of these peculiar animals. My responsibilities included painting fences to maintain a safe and welcoming environment, feeding the alpacas to ensure they were well-nourished, and assisting with outdoor tasks such as shoveling logs out of the way in the woods. Each task, big or small, played a part in supporting the rescue and helping the alpacas thrive. I found this incredibly rewarding and enjoyed participating in this.
